Collection: Lessons Collection

A new school year brings new friendships, new challenges, and a few big feelings along the way. We're highlighting the stories in our collection that help little ones navigate exactly that — kindness, courage, and being true to yourself.

These stories are short enough for a bedtime read but leave a lasting impression — the kind of book a teacher or parent can return to all year when a real-life moment calls for it.

The Whale Who Wanted to be Small - Kanani, a baby humpback whale, feels self-conscious being so much bigger than her sea creature friends and longs to be small like them. It's only when she witnesses the magnificence of Grandfather Whale that she learns to feel proud of who she is rather than wishing to be someone else. A comforting story about self-esteem and accepting what makes you different — great for kids to feel proud of what makes them unique.

The Shark Who Learned a Lesson - A gentle, ocean-set story about bullying — and what happens when a tough shark learns that being kind is stronger than being feared. A great read-aloud for the first weeks of school, when classroom dynamics are still finding their footing.

Hoku the Seal's Three Wishes - Hoku, a young Hawaiian monk seal, wanders off and makes three wishes at a magical pool — wishes that come true, but with consequences he didn't expect. The story is a light-hearted way to talk with kids about being truly grateful for what they have and who they are, with a warm, reassuring ending. A sweet reminder for the new school year about appreciating your own strengths instead of wishing to be someone else.
